This weekend was marred with death.
Beginning Friday morning, death hit us in unfathomable numbers and ages.
For us, it continued throughout the weekend. Every beep of the pager, sent Doc H charging into the hospital only to return home each time with the same morbid news-- The situation was not salvageable.
Sunday night, Doc H turned to me and said, "I couldn't save one this weekend."
No. Not this weekend.
Many could not be saved this weekend.
Do you live near Newtown? I hope this open tragedy opens up a national discussion on violence in the United States.
ReplyDeleteI hope so too! I have been laying up at night horrified, imagining how scared those children must have been and how devastated the families must be. Heartbreaking.
DeleteThis is overwhelmingly sad. Although I'm sure it doesn't mean much, sometimes, no matter how hard we try, not everyone can be saved. The very fact that every time your husband steps into an operating room and attempts to save a life speaks volumes of his character. Know that we are praying with you and Dr. H.

Well, these patients were so bad off, he couldn't even recommend surgery for them. It's frustrating for him when he can't save a life...especially when they could've had a positive outcome had they come into the hospital sooner.
DeleteI don't know how doctors and their families can go through this pain every day. It makes you appreciate life and your loved ones so much more.
ReplyDeleteIt does help you keep everything in perspective... I'll give it that.
DeleteDoctors are only human and do the best they can...continue to be supportive and help him be convinced that he did everything he could and that he is saving people in numerous ways everyday. xo
ReplyDeleteLuckily, he has very good outcomes with his patients. It just seems that this weekend, nothing could be done for anyone and he was frustrated.
DeleteWhat can I say? So sad.
ReplyDeleteIt is awful!
Delete:( No words..
ReplyDeleteI agree...
DeleteSo sad indeed, could not even watch the news. We can't imagine what those first responders and those at the hospital had to deal with too.
ReplyDeleteI hope you were not anywhere near there. B/c it was so hopelessly devastating even for the helpless first responders. I'm still crying all the time.
