What would you do if you called your husband on his cell phone and, after a few rings, you hear an unfamiliar woman's voice answer?
"Dr. Smith's phone. This is Nurse Betty."
"Ummm..., hi. This is Emma, his wife."
"Oh, hi."
"Is he in the OR?"
"Yes, we are. Can I ask him a question for you?"
"Ummm... (should I really ask what I need to ask?), how long will you be?"
"We started an hour ago and have about six hours to go."
"Well, that answers my question." (Not really. That wasn't my question.)
"Can I ask him anything else?"
I quickly contemplate asking the question I really need to ask.
I picture my husband doing something like this..
surrounded by a team like this...
I imagined my question flying across the OR, landing on the ears of the other doctors and nurses... "DOC H, YOUR WIFE IS ASKING IF PAYING $250 FOR A CAR BATTERY IS TOO MUCH? AND, SHE'S STRANDED AT THE CAR DEALERSHIP AND IS ASKING IF YOU CAN PICK HER UP?"
Never mind.
"Ummm... no, thank you, Nurse Betty. That's all. Bye."
In case you missed "You Know You're a Surgeon's Wife When...(Vol. 1), you can read it here.

haha! this has happened to me one too many times. the worst is when i send him an angry or sexy text and he's in the OR and asks a nurse to read it aloud...:(
ReplyDeleteOh, I learned the sexy text no-no the hard way. That's another post for another day. :)
DeleteI'm guessing that you have learned to do a lot of things you never expected to need to know how to do.
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY!! :/
DeleteI have been in similar situations, I learned to drop call and he will call me back when he is ready and just pay for the new battery AND for someone to fit it!
ReplyDeleteI just I'm too cheap for that. I like to spend money on shoes. :)
DeleteAww man. That's TOUGH! Kudos to you!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for fathers and brothers!
DeleteOkay, I guess you spent the $250 LOL. Anyway $250 sounds like a lot, but my husband has a luxury vehicle so it might be in the ball range. May I ask, what kind of surgeon? Let me read the first article to see.
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't. I don't like over-paying for car parts. My gut told me that was too much so I will be taking the car elsewhere. :)
DeleteHAHA oh that has happened to me so many times. The first time I didn't know what to do/say because it was so unexpected!
ReplyDeleteI know, right???
DeleteAt least you weren't frantic or panicking on the phone, or didnt start off the conversation "Hi sweet _____ (inappropriate nickname". Look at the bright side ;)
ReplyDeleteWell, that's happened before via text...
DeleteI know better now.
LOL! Having been the nurse in the OR for some of those calls, this made me giggle! :)
ReplyDeleteOoooooo!!!! I bet you have some GREAT stories! You should blog about them and link up for next month's Medical Monday bloghop. That would be fun!
DeleteI'm a new reader and I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your blog! My husband is a doc-in-training and it's refreshing to read about the experience from the wife's perspective in such a humorous way (makes the process a little easier since we all know how difficult the journey really is!). I write about our unique experience of living in apart in separate cities as he pursues his MD and I'm finishing up nursing school over at tinywifebiglife.blogspot.com if you'd like to check our story out :) Thanks again for the daily laughs and please keep writing!
ReplyDeleteI checked your blog out and am following!!! Best to you both!!!
DeleteJust found your blog through a blog hop! I totally understand your situation. Mom is a doctor and well, I cannot reach her. Imagine that...her own daughter shunned over a...patient :( Ahh, the joys. i am sure i am going to enjoy reading already LOL more than once :) Hope the car is running fine now! My blog: http://myeloquentrambles.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThanks! If you want to write about your experiences as a child of a doctor and link up with us for Feb. Medical Monday, please do! I bet we all would find your perspective very interesting!

Thanks, Natasha!
DeleteThat sounds so frustrating! I hope you got a ride home ;)
ReplyDeleteNo. I WALKED!!! Can I tell you how cold it was? :/
Deletehahaha so true!! I always wonder if they are embarrassed by this or find it amusing. Hey, when you need the man, you need him ;)
ReplyDeleteI think it's a little of both...
DeleteSometimes, I thank my lucky stars I didn't pick being a doctor because when I was younger, I always said I'd be a doctor! No thanks to those long hours!
ReplyDeleteNo kidding! The hours are HORRIBLE...
DeleteThat must be a bit tough. But I'm sure you've managed to do a lot of things on your own you never thought you would. Like putting up Plasma tv's because your hubby is in another surgery. I've seen Grey's Anatomy - I know how intense it gets. :)
ReplyDeleteYou made me snort! I love Grey's... especially for it's accuracy. :)
DeleteSounds frustrating! But when you need your husband, you need him!xx
ReplyDeleteMost definitely!
DeleteHaha awesome! This sounds like something i would've done. Did ya end up getting the battery? I love your banner! I'm a new follower via Linky Follower & Twitter.
